Dustless Chalk is the flagship of Nihon Rikagaku Industry, a Japanese maker long recognized for employing people with disabilities across its workforce. The chalk is calcium carbonate based and, since a 2005 reformulation, every stick contains fine powder milled from recycled scallop shells, a byproduct that would otherwise be discarded. Grinding the shell down to around five microns made the sticks stronger against snapping and smoother on the board; because the resulting particles are heavier, dust falls rather than drifting, so it settles less on clothes and shelves than ordinary chalk. It writes densely on green and black classroom boards and erases cleanly with a standard felt eraser. This blackboard grade is sold in 6-stick boxes across a wide color range: plain white, yellow, a 3-color assortment, a 6-color multicolor box of red, yellow, green, brown, blue and purple, plus dark red and gray. 1. Hold the stick at a low angle to the board for a broad, solid line, or use the end for fine writing.
2. Keep the writing end squared off by rotating the stick as you write instead of always using one edge.
3. Erase with a dry felt blackboard eraser; wipe the board with a damp cloth afterwards only if a ghost line remains.
4. Store the box closed and away from damp, since chalk absorbs moisture and gets crumbly in humid rooms.
5. Tap the eraser out over a bin regularly so old dust does not smear the next line.
