Blen Ballpoint Pen 0.5mm Gray Barrel Black Ink

The blen was designed around a single observation: the small vibration between pen and paper is what makes long writing sessions tiring, and it is also what makes handwriting wobble. Zebra's answer is the Blen System, three changes working together. Direct Touch holds the refill tightly inside the barrel so the tip cannot rattle; a metal weight set inside the grip drops the center of gravity toward the paper; and the internal parts are designed with no gaps, so there is nothing left to knock and buzz as you write. The effect is a pen that feels planted rather than skittish, and quiet in the hand. Inside is emulsion ink, Zebra's hybrid that blends the low drag of water-based ink with the firm, controlled feel of oil-based ink, so the line is dark without being wet. This is the 0.5mm BAS88, the finer of the two sizes, with a barrel about 11.8mm across and 143.6mm long at 12.3g. Body colors run from black, grey and white through purple, light blue, mint green and light pink, with black, blue and red ink available. Made in Japan by Zebra.

1. Click the knock to extend the tip; the internal parts are fitted without play, which is why the click and the writing both sound muted.
2. Let the pen's low center of gravity steady your hand instead of gripping hard - the design assumes light pressure.
3. Replace the refill with a Zebra NC-0.5 emulsion cartridge when the ink runs out.
4. If the line starts pale after long storage, scribble on scrap paper to reprime the ball; emulsion ink settles less than gel but can still need a restart.
5. Retract the tip before pocketing so the metal-weighted grip does not take the impact through the nib.
